NY Gov. Paterson and Drugs
I came across this article today, and it honestly made me smile. Governor Paterson, from NY, admitted to using cocaine in his 20’s, and marijuana when he was younger. This man has quite the honest streak going on, and I think it’s doing a lot of good. I think his latest confession is representative of changing beliefs in the US. Here’s a good quote from him:
“More Americans have tried a lot more during that period of time [70's] and gone on to lead responsible lives and hopefully have lived their lives to their fullest,” he said.
Exactly. So many politicians out there did drugs at some point in their life, and seem to be doing a good job with their lives now. Hopefully Paterson will be open to changing New York’s drug policy because of his past behaviors. If he had received a drug conviction like so many young people do now, I don’t think he would be the Governor of New York. So maybe he will help turn the tide, all you New York drug policy people better get on this. If the Governor of New York openly supported drug policy reform I think it would really help our cause.
For those who aren’t following this story, Paterson is the Governor of New York because of Elliot Spitzer’s resignation. I was really happy about it because he is black and he is deaf. So not only is there another minority governor, which helps bring the demographics of government in line with the demographics of society, but he is also the first real governor who is deaf. (Technically, the second one)
